Q*Bert! is the fifth level in Retro Gaming, Wonderland-Style. It is based on the 1982 arcade game of the same name.
Origin and Differences
Q*Bert was developed by Gottlieb and originally released on October 18, 1982. It is played from an isometric perspective, and the game's protagonist, Q*Bert, steps on 28 blocks arranged in a pyramid to light them all up. There are several enemies that impede Q*Bert's progress: Coily (a purple snake that bounces around), Ugg and Wrongway (purple creatures that bounce along the sides of the cubes), and Slick and Sam (creatures that can deluminate the cubes). Transporters on either side of the pyramid can be used to reach the top once per round.
In the Return to Wonderland version, the pyramid is now a triangular platform, the transporters are replaced with Teleporters, and Coileys are the only enemies. Stinky "lights up" the platform by collecting the Rainbow Coins. The Coileys and Teleporters are blocked behind Bonus Coins.
Walkthrough
The level is fairly straightforward. While Stinky is collecting the Rainbow Coins, he is protected from the Coileys by the Bonus Coins. It is recommended that the Bonus Coins be collected towards the end. Once the Exit Gate is opened, Stinky must step through the green Teleporter and exit.
Trivia
- The level's description in the Midnight Post is as follows:
Q*Bert’s classic pyramid had to be flattened into a triangle, and the transporters were replaced with teleporters. One thing that remained exactly the same: Coily! The purple snake is one of Q*Bert’s main adversaries and might well have been the inspiration for our own bouncing nuisance. Or is the Wonderland Coily a mental offspring of Gremlin Graphic’s “Thing on a Spring”?
