The Rainbow Shards are a set of seven colored crystals, one for each color of the rainbow, that appear in Wonderland Adventures. They are connected to the Rainbow Crystal and tap into the fabric connecting everyone and everything in Wonderland. During the events of Wonderland Adventures, the Shards were unearthed due to the tremors caused by the Thwarts' actions. All 7 Shards needed to be gathered to push back the Void and reverse the Thwarts' spell.
Description
Red Shard
The Red Shard is found in a crevasse in the Mushroom Grove. According to Pookie, the crevasse opened up due to the tremors, and they speculate the Shard's power is why several of the mushrooms have grown to enormous sizes. The Shard is locked behind a series of Mushroom Gates, and the player must collect eight Mushroom Keys to get to the Shard.
Orange Shard
The Orange Shard is found by the player in the caves behind Jedlic's Windmill after being forced to find an alternative exit. Once in Wondertown, the player shows the Shard to Morklin who tells the player more about the Shards.
Yellow Shard
The Yellow Shard is located in The Pyramid in The Wasteland. It is guarded by a Shadow Stinker, and the player must pass a test given by the Shadow Stinker to be granted the Shard.
Green Shard
The Green Shard is found deep inside the Thwarts' fortress in Lonely Top. The player must destroy the nearby power stations to be able to collect the Shard. According to Morklin, there is a legend of the Forever Forest that states wood spirits drew their power from a large green gem which is speculated to be the Green Shard.
Blue Shard
The Blue Shard is located in the Foggy Mountains. It was found by Gaboonga in the snow and was subsequently locked behind a Znoo-Znee combination lock at Crystal Lake. After the player breaks the lock, a Thwart steals the Shard, and the player must retrieve it from a nearby cave.
Indigo Shard
The Indigo Shard was found by Morklin in the Wonderland Temple who then proceeded to hide it. To reveal it, one must be pure of heart and carry the intention to do good. After the player reveals the Shard, a Thwart emerges from a nearby opening and steals the Shard. The player chases the Thwart deeper into the temple, and the Thwart escapes into a tunnel that connects to the Wonderland Sewers. When the player confronts the thief in the sewers, the Thwart escapes but drops the Shard.
Purple Shard
The location of the Purple Shard is initially unknown. After the player crosses the Rainbow Pool, Wysp goes out to search for the Purple Shard in eastern Wonderland. Wysp finds the player after the Thwarts complete their spell and reveals the Shard is deep within the Void guarded by all seven Thwarts.
Functionality
Because the Shards connect everything in Wonderland, one can use the Shards to travel across Wonderland, but for reasons unknown, one can only do so after crossing the Rainbow Pool in the Temple Ruins. Once the player gains the ability to travel using the Shards, the player must hit a Shard 3 times, and the Shards the player collected will play a 7-note melody. The player must then repeat the melody exactly as given which will then warp them to a certain location. The location the Shards take the player depends on the color of the Shard that the player hit. A list of where each Shard takes the player in Wonderland Adventures as well as their respective level numbers and coordinates is as follows:
- Red Shard: Forever Forest - just southwest of Forest's End; 70.wlv, (11, 15)
- Orange Shard: Windy Hills - in front of Jedlic's Windmill; 12.wlv, (17,19)
- Yellow Shard: The Plains – near the bridge that connects to Lazy Leaf Forest; 44.wlv, (34,14)
- Green Shard: The Wasteland; 90.wlv, (16,15)
- Blue Shard: The Foggy Mountains - near OobibanDeNoobi's tent; 64.wlv, (14,12)
- Indigo Shard: Wondertown - Wonderland Temple; 21.wlv, (10,16)
- Purple Shard: Lonely Top; 86.wlv, (11,12)
In hubs created in Wonderland Adventures Editor v3.00 where shard teleportation is used, the destination .wlvs must be proceeded by a negative number. Otherwise, the player will crash.[1]
During the climax of Wonderland Adventures, shard teleportation cannot be performed. Attempting to do so will display the message "The shard makes a dull sound. Something is wrong." These areas correspond to levels 93, 94, and 95.[2]
Trivia
- The manner in which the Shards are used for teleportation (hitting a Shard three times and repeating a musical pattern) was inspired by the 1985 musical game Master of the Lamps.[3]
