Centipede! is the seventh level in Retro Gaming, Wonderland-Style. It is based on the 1981 arcade game of the same name.
Origin and Differences
Centipede was developed by Atari, Inc. and originally released on June 6, 1981. The player controls the Bug Blaster and must shoot at the centipede advancing through a garden of mushrooms. If the centipede is shot in the middle, it splits apart, and the smaller centipedes can move independently. Other creatures that appear include fleas, spiders, and scorpions, each with their own properties.
In the Return to Wonderland version, the centipede is represented by a trail of Z-Bots, and the mushrooms are replaced with Rainbow Coins. Wooden Boxes serve as an additional barrier between Stinky and the "centipede". A Flying Saucer at the bottom of the level can be used to take out some of the Z-Bots.
Walkthrough
Stinky must collect the Rainbow Coins while dodging Z-Bots and fire from a Flying Saucer. If needed, the Flying Saucer can also be used to take out some of the Z-Bots. Once all the Rainbow Coins are collected, Stinky must make his way down to the bottom of the level dodging any remaining Z-Bots where Bonus Coins can also be collected. He must avoid the Flying Saucer while doing so and then exit.
Trivia
- The level's description in the Midnight Post is as follows:
In Space Invaders, we used reflectors to counter the UFO’s fireballs. This time, Stinky was able to use a lone UFO to lob fireballs at the incoming centipede (made up of a string of Z-Bots). You were, of course, able to evade the Z-Bots altogether and just run for the coins, but where would the fun be in that?
