Space Invaders! is the second level in Retro Gaming, Wonderland-Style. It is based on the 1978 arcade game of the same name.

Origin and Differences

The original game

Space Invaders was developed by Taito and originally released on April 1, 1978. In it, the player controls a cannon that can fire lasers to take out an advancing wall of aliens. There are four barriers that the player can hide under to be protected from alien fire. As more aliens are destroyed, the aliens descend more quickly. The game immediately ends if the aliens reach the bottom of the screen. There is sometimes a red spaceship that flies by on the top of the screen and can be shot for a random amount of points.

In the Return to Wonderland version, the aliens are represented by Flying Saucers, and the barriers are made up of Wooden Boxes. Stinky and Loof cannot take out the Flying Saucers directly, so Reflectors are used to reflect the shots fired by the Flying Saucers back at them.

Walkthrough

Push the reflector above Stinky up two spaces.

Push the reflector above Loof left six spaces then up two spaces.

Push the leftest reflector up then right two spaces then down.

Put both stinkers below the remaining reflectors.

When there is one UFO remaining push the rightest reflector up then left eight spaces.

Push the other reflector up two spaces then left seven spaces.

Get stinky right of the highest reflector by any amount of spaces then dodge the UFO fire until the remaining UFO has been defeated.

Collect all coins then get both stinkers to the exit.

Trivia

This one was trickier. Yes, Return To Wonderland has UFOs, and the classic “shields” of the original Space Invaders game were easily recreated using walls of wooden boxes, but Stinky and Loof had no way of fighting back. Except, of course, to use reflectors to turn the enemy fire back on them. That’ll teach those flying saucers!
